3 Surprising Signs That Your Roof May Be Damaged

three things you may want to be aware of that can mean your roof could be damaged

Most people think that the only ways to tell if a roof is damaged or having issues are the obvious signs: missing shingles and leaks. While those problems are clear and indicate your need to call in a professional roofer, there are other subtle signs to consider. Here are three things you may want to be aware of that can mean your roof could be damaged and in need of attention.

1. Strange sounds

When you’re lying in bed and the house is quiet, do you hear the pitter-patter of little feet? No, not your kids or the pets, these sounds are coming from the roof. Small animals clambering on your roof may mean that they have found some small openings to run in and out of. Have a roofer take a look for these kinds of openings and have them remediated before they become big openings and cause serious damage.

Another sound to listen for is the whistling of air flowing. This could be a sign of roof damage. Get the roof inspected for small cracks or damage that could be causing this sound. You may need to have some part of the roof repaired or resealed.

2. Loose or buckling shingles

It’s a good idea to keep an eye out for loose shingles or ones that are buckling a bit. You may have to climb up on the roof to check for this but it’s wise to do so. In Florida, we go from hurricane season to the rains of spring and summer with only a few short months in between. While you may be capable of getting up on your roof to assess any damage you might have, it’s wiser and safer to get a licensed and insured roofing company to come out and check for you. Get their professional opinion.

3. Loose nails

If you’re up on the roof, you may see some nails popping out, even if the shingles don’t appear to be loose. This is a telltale sign that the shingles may be loosening and will need repair. You may notice nails on the ground around the perimeter of the house. If they’ve come loose from your shingles, they have likely rolled off the roof onto the ground.

Call your local roofing company and get them out to assess the damage as soon as possible.
