Why You Should Never Do Your Own Roof Repairs

When you want a home improvement show, you may start to think that it’s easy to do DIY projects like roof repair work. However, there’s one thing you can’t afford to overlook here: These are television shows. They aren’t real.

What you see on TV is a story that’s been carefully constructed. Their job is to make you think that you can do any DIY project easily and without spending a whole lot of money. Unfortunately, this isn’t the truth.

Roof work is actually quite expensive. So while it may be great to just go up on your roof and fix any issues that you have with some inexpensive items that you bought from your local hardware store, this won’t happen. While it’s what your favorite DIY show has shown you, oftentimes, a project like this will end in disaster. There are a few reasons why this happens.

Roof repair work can be quite dangerous

Remember, when you work on your roof, you’re getting up on the top of your house. This is probably a height that you’re not accustomed to. Unfortunately, all it takes is one misstep, and you could fall off your roof. You could even find yourself falling through your home’s roof. Of course, these aren’t the only risks you’re taking. For instance, if your home was built before 1980, it’s quite likely that it has asbestos in it. As we all know by now, asbestos is something that can make you very sick.

Not only could you fall off of your roof while working on it, but you need to remember that you’re working with tools and materials that can be quite hazardous when they aren’t properly handled. As someone who doesn’t work on roofs frequently, you probably won’t know the first thing about being safe while using these items, especially since you’re up high off the ground.

You’ll only have low-quality materials available to use

Unlike the professionals who do roof repair work, you won’t be able to take advantage of the special pricing that’s available from some of the industry’s top roofing manufacturers (e.g., Firestone Red Shield). Therefore you’re likely to spend almost as much trying to get high-quality materials as you would hiring a professional to do the roof repair work for you.

If you still want to do the work on your own, you’ll have to make do with the materials that your can purchase from your local hardware stores. Unfortunately, those materials are unlikely to last. Additionally, you could cause more damage to your entire roof simply by using mismatched materials. This could go so far as to negatively impact your roof’s lifespan.

The work you do will likely result in even more damage to your roof

If you damage your roof now, you’ll spend a lot more money trying to fix it in the future. This is because a poorly repaired roof can result in things like leaks inside your home that damage the property (e.g., valuables, carpet, furniture) therein. While these things won’t be covered by your homeowner’s insurance, any roof repair work you have done will usually be covered. To take this a step further, you should know that if an insurance company ever does find out that you’ve done repairs on your roof by yourself, they’re likely to deny your claim.

Not only will your claim be denied, but you’ll also void any warranty you may have. This is true even if the necessary repair isn’t covered by the warranty, or else any future work may not be covered either.
